Is your attic ready for blown-in insulation?
Blown-in insulation is loose fill blown through a hose across your attic floor. In Hampton it's usually the most direct way to fix a thin attic, because the hose reaches the low corners and tight spots you'd never get to on your knees.
Most people call us because the rooms upstairs run hot, the room over the garage never feels right, or someone poked their head through the hatch and saw the tops of the joists showing. The price turns on how big the attic is, how many inches are already up there and whether anything has to be fixed or cleared out first, and the schedule mostly turns on those repairs, since nothing gets blown in until they're done. Older houses tend to need more of that prep, and gaps around pipes and lights often call for attic air sealing before any fill goes down. I'll look at your attic with you, go over what I find and then write it up, so you're working from your own number and not a guess.
How we do blown-in insulation
Before anything goes in, we close the gaps around pipes, wires, light fixtures and the attic hatch, a step called air sealing, because loose fill does a poor job when air is pushing up through it. Then we set baffles, short channels at the eaves where the roof comes down low, so the attic keeps breathing and the fill can't slide down and bury the vents. After that we blow it across the whole attic at an even depth, all the way out to the edges and not just piled up in the middle, and we pack it full enough that it won't sink into thin spots later. Recessed lights that aren't rated to be covered get a metal or wire barrier around them, so the fill stays back where it belongs.
If the old layer is soaked, moldy or full of droppings, we pull it out first with insulation removal, since fresh fill on top only hides the problem. When the drafts and cold floors go past the attic, home insulation looks at the walls and crawl space too, so you're not fixing one part of the house and leaving the rest.
Topping up what's already there
This suits an attic with a dry, clean layer that's simply too thin, because we can seal the gaps and blow new fill right over it. It's usually the lower-cost route, and it keeps the old material out of the trash.
Clearing out and starting fresh
This suits an attic where the old insulation got wet, matted down or filled with droppings, because burying that keeps the problem in your ceiling. It costs more up front, but you end up with a clean attic and one even layer you know the history of.
Blown-in insulation in Hampton and the city's permit question
The city's permit office, Hampton Community Development, lists work like alterations, ductwork, electrical wiring and drywall, and blown-in insulation isn't named on that list, so the question is open for a job like this, not answered. Before we start, I check with the city for your address, and if they call for a permit, we apply for it as the contractor and set up the inspections.
A lot of the attics we climb into around Hampton belong to older houses, with a thin layer that's been up there for decades, a hatch tucked in a hallway closet and a bathroom fan that blows straight into the attic instead of out through the roof. We get those fans vented outdoors before we blow anything in, because damp air dumped into the attic ends up soaking the fill and the framing around it. We see the same kind of attics on jobs in Newport News and Poquoson, and we do the work the same way there.

I write every estimate myself
I come out to look at your attic and write the estimate, and our lead installer runs the crew while I check in during the job. The person who told you what you're getting is the one making sure you got it.
Plain answers since 2017
We've been in business since 2017, and I spent a couple of years before that explaining insulation jobs at kitchen tables for another company. If topping up your attic isn't worth the money, I'll tell you so and lay out what is.

What happens after you call about blown-in insulation in Hampton?
Call or send a request
You call or fill out the form, and we get back to you to set a time for me to come out. It helps to know roughly how big the attic is and where the hatch is.
Walk the attic together
I look at how many inches are up there, the lights, the vents and any damp spots, and go over all of it with you before I write anything. Then you get the estimate in writing with each part spelled out, so you can see what you'd be paying for and decide.
Fix first, then fill
When you're ready, we take care of anything that has to be fixed first and handle the permit if the city calls for one, then our crew seals, sets baffles and blows in the fill. At the end, the crew walks you through what was done, up in the attic if you'd like to see it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my attic needs repairs before blown-in insulation?
Your attic needs work first if you see wet or damp insulation, moldy or rotted rafters, poor ventilation or old knob and tube wiring. Wet insulation usually means the roof is leaking, so plan and budget for that repair ahead of the insulation. A hatch that's hard to get through or an attic with very little room to work is also worth sorting out before the fill goes in.
Can new blown-in insulation go over my old insulation?
Usually, yes, because loose fill can go right on top of existing fiberglass batts or blankets. It's still a fair question to ask whoever comes out, since an old layer that's wet, moldy or full of droppings should come out first. I'll tell you which one you have when I look.
What is the best way to handle vermiculite in my attic?
Leave it alone until an approved lab tests it for asbestos. Vermiculite is lightweight, pea-size and flaky gray, and your local health department can give you the name of an approved lab. We won't blow anything over it or move it until you have the results.
Should I rent a blowing machine or hire someone for blown-in insulation in Hampton?
Hiring it out is often the better call, because loose fill goes on with a blowing machine, and getting it even and packed enough is the part people struggle with. Some home improvement stores do rent the machine, so doing it yourself is possible. If you're weighing it, I'm happy to look at the attic and tell you what I'd watch out for.
Who licenses insulation contractors in Virginia?
Virginia's Board for Contractors licenses businesses that build, repair or improve property owned by others, and Insulation & Weather Stripping is one of its specialties. Each license also has a class that limits the size of a single contract, and a Class C contractor can take jobs over $1,000 but under $30,000. You can compare your quote with the contractor's class and specialty when you look them up.
How much does blown-in attic insulation cost in Hampton?
Across the US, installing blown-in attic insulation usually costs about $4 to $7.50 per square foot. That's the general market, not our price, and where your attic lands depends on its size, how much is already up there and whether anything has to be fixed or removed first. I'll give you your own number after I've seen the attic.
