Can you insulate the walls of a house that's already built?
For a house that's already standing, wall insulation in Hampton is usually done by drill and fill. We drill small holes near the top of each wall cavity, the space between the studs, from inside or outside, and fill it with blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose. It's a fairly gentle way to get insulation into empty or thin walls without opening them up.
Most people who call us about their walls have one room that never feels right, cold along the outside wall or drafty near the outlets, even after attic insulation went in. What moves the price is how much wall we're filling, which side we work from and what has to be fixed first, and the schedule mostly turns on those same fixes and on any siding work you've got coming. I'll look at it with you and write up what I find, so you see your own number before you decide anything.
How we handle wall insulation in an existing house
I start by finding out what's inside the walls, because if there's old knob and tube wiring, an electrician sorts it out before we put any insulation near it. Then we talk through whether to work from inside or outside, and whether it's worth holding off for new siding, since that choice changes how the walls get opened and patched. Once that's settled, our crew drills each cavity, packs it full, plugs the holes and cleans up, and if filling a wall wouldn't do you any good, I'll tell you and we leave it alone.
Walls are usually one piece of a bigger draft. If air is slipping in around outlets, the attic hatch or where pipes come through, our air sealing services close those gaps so the new insulation isn't fighting moving air, and if the cold is coming up from below, basement insulation deals with the floor you're standing on.
Blown-in for finished walls
This suits most homes where the drywall or plaster is up and you'd rather not open it, because blown-in insulation works well in odd-shaped, hard-to-reach and blocked cavities. It's how we handle existing walls.
Batts for walls that are open
If you're gutting a room and the studs are bare, rolled batts can be a very cost-effective choice when the cavities are a standard size that matches them. Each batt has to be cut to fit snug around pipes and boxes without being squashed, since a crushed batt leaves gaps.
Wall insulation permits and flood rules in Hampton
Whether your wall job needs a permit is something I check with the city's Development Services Center for your address before we start, and if the city requires one, we apply as the contractor and set up the inspections. If your house sits in the 100-year floodplain, the city requires a permit for all proposed development there. Improvements costing half or more of the building's market value bring the same requirements as a new building, which can mean raising the house above the 100-year flood level, so if the walls are part of a bigger renovation, tell me about the rest of it. You can look into it yourself by registering online with the city for permitting and inspections or by calling 757-727-8311.
Plenty of the older Hampton houses we're called to have walls that are empty, thin or blocked partway down, so we check each cavity as we go and nothing gets left hollow. We see the same kinds of walls on jobs in Newport News and Poquoson, and we work in other cities nearby too, so call and ask if yours isn't listed.

What happens after you call about your walls
Call or send a request
Call (757) 367-8752 or use the form, tell us which rooms feel cold or drafty, and we'll set a time to come out. We take calls Mon–Fri 6 AM–10 PM and Sat–Sun 8 AM–10 PM.
Look at the walls together
I check the walls, the siding and the wiring with you and talk it through before anything goes on paper. The written estimate then lays out which walls we'd fill, from which side and what has to happen first, so you know what you're paying for before you agree to anything.
Fix what comes first
Anything that has to be handled before we drill, like old wiring that needs an electrician, gets done first so the insulation goes into walls that are ready for it. We start once you've had the time you need to decide.
Fill, patch and walk through
Our crew drills, fills and patches each wall, then cleans up. Before they leave, they walk you through what was done, room by room.
Frequently asked questions
How much does wall insulation cost in Hampton, VA?
I can't give you an honest number until I've seen the walls, so every job is priced from an estimate at your house. The total moves with how many walls and stories we're filling, whether we go in through siding or through plaster and drywall, how much patching that takes and whether any wiring has to be fixed first. Call (757) 367-8752 and I'll come take a look.
What is the best way to insulate existing walls, from inside or outside?
Go in from inside when the layer behind your siding is in good shape, and from outside when the siding is coming off anyway or the inside walls are hard to get to. Drilling from outside breaks the drainage plane, the house wrap or similar layer that sheds water behind the siding, so it has to be patched or fully replaced. Working from inside leaves that layer alone, and I check both the access and the wrap's condition at the estimate.
Is it worth waiting until I replace my siding to insulate my walls?
If new siding is already planned for the near future, waiting usually makes sense, because with the siding off the walls can be filled from outside and the house wrap checked and reinstalled if it needs it. It's also the time to add rigid foam insulation, stiff foam boards on the outside of the wall, along with filling the cavities or instead of it. If the siding is years off, I wouldn't sit in a cold room waiting for it.
Can walls with knob and tube wiring be insulated?
Not until the wiring is dealt with. Federal building guidance points out that the National Electrical Code doesn't allow insulation to be applied to or surround knob and tube wiring, the old wiring strung on porcelain knobs. That's why an electrician settles it before we fill anything.
What causes blown-in wall insulation to settle and leave gaps?
Settling comes from insulation that went in too loose or didn't fill the whole cavity, so it slumps and leaves an empty band near the top. Blown-in insulation has to fill each cavity completely and go in dense enough that settling leaves no gaps. Packed that tight, it can also slow the air moving around inside the wall.
How do I keep dust down when walls are insulated from inside?
Cover the floor below the work and close off the area, which is what federal guidance calls for, so dust and debris don't spread through the house. It's a fair question to ask any crew, us included, before work starts.
Other work that often goes with wall insulation
Air sealing services
When drafts sneak in at outlets, the attic hatch or pipe openings, sealing those gaps keeps your new wall insulation from working against moving air.
Basement insulation
If the floors stay cold over a basement, insulating down there reaches a chill your walls can't fix.
